Default Question about Dvd copy to copy

I was just wondering

If i got a already backed-up dvd film, to make a direct copy of it (on the fly)
does my source drive need to be a dvd player? or can i just use my cd rom drive as the source drive?

is even making an on the fly copy possible? sorry i'm knew to this and would like to know
