Default Video card or mother board?

sponsored links

I have:

AMD 1000 mhz
512 SDRAM
K7 Mother board
Geforce 2 MX 400 (big mistake I know)

Now it is time to upgrade. I have been playing games very well, but at some points they are slowing down. Should I upgrade my mother board and get a new CPU? Or get a GeForce4 Ti 4800 SE? The computer runs fine, but it is starting to slow up in some games. I can get the TI for a good price (about 150 US). While I can see the upgrade of the chip and board to be around 400 us. Im in college, so I don't have much money. What would you recommend? Thanks alot!

Also If I should upgrade my board and chip, what are some good ones?

The Chaintech GeForce 4 TI4800 with 128MB DDR is a pretty good one. It will give you much improvement over the mistakenly bought GF2 MX400 .

However, I would also upgrade the CPU to at least XP 2000+ if the mobo accept it. The info on mobo you gave is pretty hard to guess which one it is since more than 1 manufacturers have mobo with prefix K7. BTW, the 2000+ costs about $58 street price.

I suggest you check pricewatch.com for prices.

bad luck, you have a 200mhz FSB motherboard you can only have a amd Athlon / Duron CPU (no XP)

Athlon go up to 1.4 i think and duron 1.3

so you have a hard choice on what you want to do???

You can either spend 90 of your US dollars and get a new MB (Van will recomend the Asus A7V600) and Xp 2000+. Or just get a Athlon 1.4 which will give you an improvemt in games for quite a while if that all you use it for and can afford

This is an old mobo that only accepts 200MHz CPU's so I don't see any benefits to replace the CPU on your system.

And I also question about whether or not you'll benefit from replacing the graphics card since the AGP bus is only 4x and the MX400 is more than enough to fill up the potential of the AGP on your machine.

I think you just go ahead to get the TI4800, which will easily be transferred to another system, and buy the new mobo, RAM, CPU, etc. as money allows. Don't put more money to upgrade this old system. You'll waste the money without getting any real benefits.

One more thing, don't upgrade the CPU because going from 1.0MHz to something like 1.3 or 1.4MHz will not give you a remarkable jump. Just a waste of money!

ok, how does this look for an upgrade. Would this work? I have about 160GB of HD space and everything else I need. Would this be pritty much be the same thing as getting a new computer but cheaper?
