Question Windows XP Home slow/weird boot up [compaq; x1000; winXP]

sponsored links

HI All,

Recently my laptop has been hanging for about 1 minute at the welcome screen for windows xp home edition.
I ran defrag (it needed it), I ran chk disk, I did a disk clean all with the same result.
Then I relaized that I had a mapped network drive that I was not accessing (it was set up when I was onsite at a client). I removed/deleted the mapped network drive and rebooted.

Guess what? It booted up very quickly past the windows welcome screen straight into my desktop but before I could pat myslef on the back it hung after bringing up the battery/elec icon in the bottom right hand corner for about 45 seconds.
Then the xp welcome music started and it continued loading up the icons. Next icon was the sound volume icon, then the networks icons then nortons.

Does this everytime! Boots up quickly into desktop hangs 45 seconds to a minute before playing the 'ol xp welcome music then continues to load up sound volume icon and the rest.

Any ideas as it really annoying me. During the hang you cannot use the mouse etc.

Thanks
cruelhoax

You can use MSCONFIG to some of the startup options and determine which one is causing the hang. (Disable half of the startup options, reboot, see if the hang still occurs, then re-enable or disable more startup options until you narrow down which one is causing the problem).

Click Start -> Run... -> type MSCONFIG
