Divx version 5 is superb quality for the compression but the reason why it will never take off in a stand alone player is because its a technolgy stealer ripping off DVD quality and compressing it more, divx 3, div4 etc you would have to have your stand alone linked to the net or keep flashing it all the time ! forget it !

lets look at DivX vs. VCD

DivX is
-Better Quality
-needs Fewer Disks (only one disk needed a lot of the time)

oh and you idiots that say VCD's can play on standalone DVD players. what do you get If you buy
-an AMD 600 base unit 80
-A TV out graphics Card 30
-CD drive 20
and set it to autorun VCD's, SVCD's, DivX's
A Kickass 130 standalone Player

Divx
VCD
i prefer divx over vcd too but i can't see many people replacing their stand-alone with a 150 pc tower... just dont think its gonna look that impresive sitting next to ur new home entertainement system! also, with dvdr taking off, i bet well see a lot more dvd quality svcds on dvdr.

checkout this divx stand-alone player:

I also prefer vcd/svcd/xvcd for the same reasons as above. I can't stand the hum my pc makes. Where are the stand alone divx players? If I could get my hands on one of those, if they exist, I'd jump ship to divx. Obviously DIVX offers better quality, and compression, but until stand alone players are widespread, vcd is the trade king.

Divx is good, but no standalone players support it. Why not make a Xvcd ro XSvcd.

I read your page PREECY concerning your project!! Very interesting! I wish I had time to build one of those. DivX rules! I still gotta go with the Apex 1100w which retails at $71 here in Chicago plays DVD, VCD, SVCD, MP3, and most mpegs (non vcd format just burned as an iso). Can't beat that for the price.
