Default is it possible to network from DOS with a direct cable (parallel)?

I tried doing it with my ethernet card but it's too complicated. I cant find smc 8022 driver for DOS anywhere.

How about using a direct connect cable thru the printer ports? Is that more easely done? Do I need to download special software? If so - anyone know where?
Thanks
