for the pausing at the beggining if you already havnt got rid of it, go to tools / internet setting / connections / lan settings and if automatically detect settings is on, tick it off and try opening another browser window to see if it has gone.

On the other hand of speeding your modem up, phone your telephone provider and ask them to check your line or if they could give it a boost. This may / may not improve performance, but give it a go.

I still got this problem. tryed everything uninstalled, lan settings etc. Still taking 30 seconds + before it evern attemps to load a page. thanks jamie

Only a few other things I can think of to try apart from running your own dns server.

1. Use a seperate cache server. You can search for open webcaches through Google. One you can try is on port 3128. Go to the Connections tab in IE settings and then Lan Settings and enter the details in the proxy settings.

2. Reinstall dun depending on your OS. I can talk you through Win9x dun reinstall but many new OS's such as ME/2K/XP tend to look after many things themselves.

Last resort would be to reinstall the OS.
