No a blank disc wont work the xbox says it cant recognize any disc then. It does somehow verify that a game is in the xbox drive even without the ide cable , maybe a verification signal goes through that weird power cable (cd audio does go through it also) .

Works great with my OLD panasonic 6x dvd-rom thats just been sittin around collecting dust. u do have to follow n64romsusa's steps for it to work perfectly though. really strange how it can verify a disc w/o the ide cable hooked up, but it won't play without it!

hate burst any bubbles, but when i connect my dvd-rom to my xbox i unplug the xbox power cable, and i don't even need a disc in the xbox dvd-rom. i think i must be lucky,

Ok i have my Samsung drive hooked in , looks proper !

But , its flashes green and red (get ur xbox fixed)

Does this mean it doesnt work ? ??

Xbox manual has a great section in the back on what those lights mean.

Maybe someone can take the drive out of an apex dvd player & put it in the xbox? Now that would be interesting.

I doubt that , if the xbox detects that the power cable to the original xbox dvd drive is unplugged the xbox is damaged screen comes up . Unless maybe they made the first batch of systems (like bought on the first day of xbox's release) to not detect that.
