Question Playing CD games from hard drive instead

sponsored links

I'm new to the MAC arena so please bear with me. I need to know if it is possible to copy a game CD to the hard drive and play the game from there thus avoiding man-handling by certain sub-5 year old grimy fingered individuals. I have done this on PCs with Windows. I hope it is possible on a Mac

OS is 9.x
10+ Gig drive with over 9 Gigs available

If someone could give me a step by step or point me to a doc that explains all the gory details, I would greatly appreciate it....

Sincerely,

Before we can give an accurate answer, we'll need to know what platform the game is designed for. PS2, PSX, Xbox, Gamecube, Mac, or PC? I'm not a guru for this question, but I'm pretty sure that you can play any Mac game from the hard drive, and any PSX game if you have an emulator. As far as the other platforms, you're probably out of luck. If I'm wrong, someone in here with more experience will advise you how to handle it.

These are games written for Macs (Educational software). We can copy the contents of the CDs to the hard drive all we like. It's when we try to run the games where we get the problem. The game still wants to access the CD instead of reading from the hard drive. There must be some sort of parameter file that tells the game where to look for its files. If I can figure out what and where these files are, I can modify them to look at the hard drive.

Thanks,

Rich

1. you can use the disk image program that is in your utilities folder to make an image in os 9

or

2. (you can make an image in toast and mount the image I think I havent tried this but I think it will work even though it seems silly)

I woould use solution number 1 though I'll test out # 2 tonight when I get home

I forgot I had my ibook with me right now I made a disk image in toast 5 by selecting image (the disk icon that has 2 disks)

then I went under file pull down and choose save as image

then I when to the utilities pull down and choose "mount image" and it works just fine.

After you do this you can close toast 5 also

Does this "Toast" software come with Macs or do I have to purchase it separately? Also, when I create an image, will it be the size of the entire CD (i.e 650megs) or just the size of all the files?

Thanks,

Rich
