And when I'd open them before I got rid of the other compressor, it would just make i urn scrambled when converting it.

WMV1 is Windows Media 7 WMV2 is Windows Media 8. It was scrambled because it was using the wrong decoder, there are no VFW decoders for WMV1/2 therefor you can not use Virtual Dub to convert them.

As I already said if you want to convert an ASF/WMV file that uses wm7 or 8 then you need to use TMPGEnc.

Alright, thanks-one thing about tmpec though, is there any way to select more settings for it like virtualdub so I could get it working in my dc?

And when I try to encode the files to avi with tmpec, they turn out to have a really big size compared to virtualdub....

The output size will depend on the codecs/bitrates that you choose. With TMPGEnc you can resize, crop, do noise reduction, etc.

If you really want to use Virtual Dub though, you could always just save out an AVI using a lossless codec and then re-encode with Virtual Dub or use TMPGEnc to frameserve via the VFAPI wrapper codec.
