Can't you just use the net send command to send messages around a network?

You go into MSDOS Prompt and type "net send" then either IP address or computername then message content.

Or you could just go to Start -> Run... -> type "net send <computer name> <message>"

You could also put the IP address instead of the computer's name, but the computer's name is usually easier.

If you want to send a message to the whole workgroup, put * instead of a computer's name.
