I'm sure most of you are aware the main factor is processing power when it comes to encoding.

The program i mainly use is dvdx2.0

I run a 2000xp @ 2200xp.

I can encode a normal dvd - vcd in about 1hr30mins at near enough max quality.
Can also do a svcd in about 2hrs +

I find that if i start to do something while tmpegenc is encoding my time left will suddenly jump up 10 hours or so and not drop back down.

As i clock my fsb is also increased so i get improvements from that.

Tried the one that comes with Adobe Premiere 6.5 and I was not very impressed with it's speed or quality.

I guess the standalone encoder would be quicker, but the quality I would think would be the same.

New to vcd/svcd. But the time it takes for TMPG to do its thing (I guess its the decoding) only takes about an 1 hour for me. Now from DVD-in-drive insertion to finish burn takes a while. SmartRipper is finished in about 5 minutes, DVD2avi takes about 15, TMPG takes about 1 hour for each half (two halves) and the burn only takes 4 minutes.

AMD Athlon 1.8GHZ XP 2200+
480 MB ram
60 GB hard drive
