The didn't go bankrupt.
Sega is now making lots of games for other systems and arcades.
The quit the hardware business (ie Dreamcast) because they figured they could make more money just being a software developer.
It's as simple as that.

They are now making a lot of games for nintendo and sony. They made a few for xbox though. Now, I will give you my theory why the dc failed. I would say it was due to a few things. 1: the timing of it. When the dc came out, pretty much everybody already had an n64, or a playstation, and it was too soon to spend more $$ on a game system. One of their other problems was that to play copies of games you didn't need any type of mod chip, and a lot of people will stick to originals rather than messing with a mod chip, so they also lost a lot of money that way. Also they didn't have too many outside devolpers doing games, so all those things together probably killed it.

What caused Sega's downfall?

1. Sega Saturn
2. Sony Playstation

Why?... Because not enough people actually bought enough games for them to stay in the console hardware business.
