Question A problem with my CD writer not solved by anything in the FAQ, help needed! [Me; ; winME]

sponsored links

Anyone like a challenge?

Ok here is my problem. I had a teac 12x writer with no buffer under run protection In a brand new Athlon 1.4 system. The only software on the system was windows me and nero 5.5.
When trying to burn a cd the write buffer in nero would simply start at 100% and empty to 0% at which point nero would say "buffer under run".

Why was this was happening when i was not using the system for anything else at the time?
I didn't know. Anyway, i took it back to the shop and got a replacement. This time a TEAC CD-W516EB - a 16x writer with buffer under run protection.

Now what happens is the drive burns and the buffer empties - exactly as before with the 12x - but now when it reaches 9% the writer stops burning and the buffer refills. When the burning resumes the buffer empties down to 9% again at which point the protection kicks in again stopping the burning, allowing the buffer to refill again.

I know that this shouldn't be the case. The system is idle apart from the cd writing so the buffer should stay full, around 98% and the writer stay writing. My computer seems to be incapable of keeping the write buffer full and burning the cd at the same time.

Why?!?

This wouldn't bother me but this sequence of burn...stop...refill...burn...stop...refill is taking over 15mins a cd on a 16x burner.

In my old 300mhz computer i had a HP 4x with under run protection which did cd's faster than this.

Can someone please help

As requested in the FAQ post;

I am using a TEAC CD-W516EB on IDE, secondary slave

the settings are:
Disconnect enabled
Sync Data transfer enabled
AIN disabled
DNA disabled; enabling this results in the burn timing out.

In the hard disk controller tab it says:
ALi M5229 PCI Bus Master IDE Controller

also the primary and secondary controller say dual fifo after them. Driver provided by microsoft

also what does DMA do?

Thanks for reading

and thanks in advance

Cool

You have already sussed the problem out m8...it's DMA or Direct Memory Access. THis allows your PC to perform several IDE BUS ops at the same time.
Do you happen to know the make & model of your Mobo? It's obviously an Ali Magic chipset.
If they don't have a Bus Master update that can handle enabling DMA and they should, you may need to go to the Microsoft/Intel drivers.

Default Progress, in the wrong direction

Ok, I've been talking to Hoss in the chatroom, thanks for all your help BTW.
I've managed to get DMA enabled on all drives but nero now doesn't burn at all, it hangs for 2mins at 2% done. Then it generates this report on the error that occurs. Anyone got any suggestions? This has got all the config settings in it too

Default

try putting the writer as secondary master - most manufacturers recommend this but its not always necessary
