Just because windows doesn't report a fault with the card doesn't mean its working perfectly. Could just be a problem with one of the connectors with the individual cables inside the cat5.

I have tried two different crossover cables, both with the same result. One that was made for me by somebody on this board, and a manufacured one with moulded plugs. I would have thought it was unlikely that two cables would be faulty.

Well, I have now swapped the network cards over, put the one from the host in the client pc, and still no joy. I am at a complete loss as to what to do now.

I thinks the best things now is to return everythings you got, and then get two new ethernet card from linksys plus a linksys router too. then try to get some new cat5 cable and if you can, try to return your usb dsl modem and get a regular dsl modem, not the internal one, but the external ones and not the one with the usb connector...

if it's good enough, then try to reinstall both of the windows xp pro on both of your computers.......

and now, try to set the whole things up again...

------------------------------------------------------------------

bottom line, if you can't get it to work either, or for so how, then try to get a cable internet service...

----------------------------------------

third line, I wish you goodlucks!!! Well, i will be setting up my network next month, I don't know if i will run into problems like yours too, lol !!!

I wouldn't wish it on anybody. See, I don't reckon my equipment is faulty, because I can share files and printers ok, my computers both appear in network neighbourhood, it is just shring my internet connection that is the problem.

If you get the same problem with the network cards swapped over then this really is confusing.

Let me get things straight, both computers can see each other in network neighbourhood, and can share files / printers?

You have no firewall running on either PC?

You haven't messed arround with the MTU setting for the DSL connection on one of the PC's have you?

I think returning all your hardware is a bit drastic, maybe re-installing windows on one/both pc's first would be a better option.

And as for linksys, wouldn't use their stuff if they gave me it for free. I've had more linksys equipment fail on me then any other manufacturer even the no-brand cheap generic stuff.

One other thing you could try on the client pc is 'route print' from a command prompt. This shows you what routes its using to get from itself to other pc's.

Good luck.
