try these

i have exact spec as urs but instead of ar2.02 ...i have ar2.01 (should be pretty much the same) anyway .. this method worked for me ...

"Load AR2v2 keeping Reset button pressed
Select Action Replay Codes
Highlight 'Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX2' Code
press START
press EJECT and insert Original-TOC-DVD and press EJECT to close
wait 10 Seconds
now press X on 'with Codes' and X once again
Error-Message appears: 'Too many Codes'
Original-TOC-DVD stops spinning
now release Reset-Button and insert DVD-R Backup
press X to confirm Error-Message
now press Circle twice to enter Mainmenu again
choose 'START GAME', 'without Codes' and then X to start
Codes are getting actualised and DVD-R boots"

Before being able to boot DVDRs, you must first configure your PS2 by doing the following:
1. Place your GS2 v2 disc into the PS2 & press reset.
2. Select GameShark Codes, then press X.
3. Select Add New Game, then press X.
4. Press X a further 3 times. Each time, Updating Code List, Please Wait will be displayed.
5. Hold the reset button until it turns red.
This needs only be done once. Your PS2 is now ready to boot DVDRs by only needing to do the following:
1. Place your GS2 v2 disc into the PS2, then hold the reset button until it turns red.
2. Ask someone to press the reset button & keep it held in, until told to release it. After a few moments, the reset button will turn green & the GameShark main menu screen will be displayed.
3. Highlight the GameShark Codes, but do not press X yet.
4. Press eject & swap the GameShark disc for a demo disc that has a large size TOC.
5. Press eject once more to close the drawer, then wait 10 seconds.
6. Press X, then highlight New Games & press X once more.
7. New Code should already be highlighted, with either an empty box to it's left, or one with a tick in it.
8. Press X to add or remove the tick (it doesn't matter which), then press Start on your controller.
9. The screen should now say With Code/Without Code. Highlight With Code.
10. Ask the person helping you to let go of the reset button, whilst at the exact same time you begin pressing X continuously until the screen Updating Code List is displayed.
11. The drawer will open & you will have a short time to replace the demo disc with the DVDR, before the tray closes itself.
12. The screen will then go black for a while, & the game will load.

Here is the method everybody is talking about.
I haven't tried it but goodluck with it

i' ve got a scph30003R no mod-chip and action replay V2.1 and yes i'm playing MGS 2 on dvdr...how you ask, well here's how to do it.
boot up action replay, when on main screen put in devil may cry demo.
go into codes screen and add a new game (you can call it anything)
now add a new code with just zero's in it(you can call that anything).
repeat this 5 or 6 times then press circle and get back to the main screen.
devil may cry is still spinning.now select start game with codes and get ready because when you press x for the final time the disc stops spinning while the dongle updates codes.this gives you 5 seconds to do the swap trick and hey presto the dvdr boots straight up and away you go.
I presume i am the first to work this out, at least you don't need to mess about with 1.7 back-ups any more.

================================================== =======================
I have AR2V2 and Neo 2.2 and I can boot DVD-R backups.

Use the Dave Mirra method.

1. Load AR2 V2 and hold reset button
2. Select Action Replay Codes (still holding reset)
3. Highlight Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX2 code (still holding reset)
4. Press start (still holding reset)
5. Press eject and insert original DVD (DMC demo is good) (still holding reset)
6. Press Eject to close tray and wait about 10 seconds (still holding reset)
7. Press 'x' on Withcodes, then 'x' again (still holding reset)
8. Erros message appears 'Too many codes' (at this point you will hear the
disk stop spinnin')
9. Release reset button, tray opens, swap for backup.
10. Press x to confirm the error message
11. Press circle twice to return to main menu
12. Goto 'Start Game', 'Without codes' - press x
13. Game boots.

Hope it helps,

if you are still having problems, it may be that you have a Version 5 PS2 which supposedly has trouble booting DVD-R, try www.help-forums.com and go to the PS2Ownz DVD-R swap forum.

Hi m8, I don't think it works with 1.6, but you can get a new action replay disc with dongle for £17.99 at ***********.play247.com

if you did get new AR you could try this

Some people have had problems booting a copied version of AR 1.7 so I
recommend you get AR 2.0.

Neo 2/2.2 with AR 1.7 or 1.9

This requires an original PS2 DVD and AR v1.7 or v1.9.
1) Turn on PS2 with AR 1.7/1.9 (holding down the ON/RESET).
2) Select Start Game (Still Holding ON/Reset).
3) Press EJECT (while still holding the ON/RESET button) and swap AR with
PS2 ORIGINAL DVD.
4) Press EJECT to close (Wait 10 seconds).
5) Then select WITHOUT CODES. Wait until disc stops.
6) Now let go of reset and the tray comes out, swap PS2 ORIGINAL DVD for a
back-up DVD-R and press X just as the tray starts to go back in
(IMPORTANT)!

Neo 2/2.2 with AR 2.0

This requires an original PS2 DVD and AR v2.
1) Load AR2 V2 keeping Reset button pressed
2) Select Action Replay Codes
3) Highlight Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX2 Code
4) Press START
5) Press EJECT and insert Original DVD
6) Wait 10 Seconds
7) Now press 'X' on 'With Codes' and 'X' once again
8) Error-Message appears: 'Too many Codes'
9) Original DVD stops spinning
10) Perform EA Trick (Release Reset), insert DVDR Backup
11) Press 'X' to confirm Error-Message
12) Now press Circle twice to enter Main Menu again
13) START GAME, without Codes, press 'X'
14) Codes are getting actualised
15) DVDR boots

Neo 4

This requires an original PS2 DVD.
1) Turn on the PS2 with no disk inserted and press X to get to browser
screen
2) Insert ORIGINAL DVD, close drawer with EJECT (while still holding
EJECT)
3) Wait until GOLD DISK appears on screen & release EJECT
4) Swap ORIGINAL DVD with DVDR - drawer will auto close after 5 seconds
5) Press X to start game

Without a Chip, with AR 1.7 or 1.9

This requires an original PS2 DVD and AR v1.7 or v1.9.
1) Load up Action Replay CD.
2) In the main menu, select 'Start Game'
3) Hit Eject and insert a "real" DVD game that is larger than the DVDr you
are going to play. Close the CDROM.
4) Now select 'With Codes' if you are going to be using cheats, or
'Without'
if you are not.
5) Now you should be a the 'Please Insert Game Disc' screen. Now perform
the
normal knife/tool swap.
6) Take out the DVD game and put in your game backup DVDr.
7) Use tool swap again to pull pin back to left.
8) Press X

Without a Chip, with AR 2.0

This requires an original PS2 DVD and AR v2.
1) Load AR2 V2
2) Select Action Replay Codes
3) Highlight Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX2 Code
4) Press START
5) Press EJECT and insert Original DVD
6) Wait 10 Seconds
7) Now press 'X' on 'With Codes' and 'X' once again
8) Error-Message appears: 'Too many Codes'
9) Original DVD stops spinning
10) Now perform swap trick & insert DVDR Backup
11) Press 'X' to confirm Error-Message
12) Now press Circle twice to enter Main Menu again
13) START GAME, without Codes, press 'X'
14) Codes are getting actualised
15) DVDR boots
