Zone Alarm, as their marketing blerb says, is noisy at first then quietens down.
Whenever a proggy tries to access the Net for the First time Zone Alarm prompts the user for permission, you can answer Yes or No and also set it to remeber your answer.
Also when Ports are being scanned it will alert you, however these alerts can be turned off but still logged.

So it can be unobtrusive once you have it correctly setup.

I agree zonealarm goes off every 5 mins when first installed.

But after that its cool.never bothers me unless i get pinged.

i have only ever used zonealarm so cannot coment on the others but i have never had conflicks on wn98se or xp pro,,,,,,ime more than happy with it.
