Question Newbie Needin Help

i'm very new to everything on the net can anyone help me. i have .avi files on my cpu but cannot find any appropriate "decompressor" needed to play them in windows media player

You need to install the apropriate codec.... mose likely divx.

Try: ***********.headbands.com/gspot/ it will tell you exactly what codec the avi uses.

Also this really should be in the vcd forum.

i have d/l gspot used it on my avi file it says that i have the right codec (video format) but in direct show render it says i need an appropiate decompressor

For AVI's there are two codecs. VFW and directshow. VFW is used for encoding/decoding with applications like VirtualDub. Directshow on the otherhand is used for playback with players like windows media player or Power DVD.

VFW codecs are DLL files such as DIVX.DLL or XVID.DLL. Directshow codecs/filters are AX files such as DIVX.AX or XVID.AX.

Anyway, you never said what codec... But whatever it is I would suggest reinstalling it.
