From a support page: (does not sound good)

When I try to record, I get "Optimum Power Calibration Error (Sense Code 0xAF)".

The optimum power calibration area is a special area near the center of the recordable disc. Before writing a track on a disc, the Recorder must adjust the amount of power supplied to the writing laser for the optimum setting w/respect to the Disc currently in the drive. The optimum calibration area is reserved for this purpose. If this area becomes full, the drive canít write to the disc.

The power calibration failed, possibly due to a problem with the disc being mounted or an internal hardware malfunction in the Recorder. Insert a new blank disc and repeat the disc creation process. If the error persists, contact Technical Support
