Probably because you don't have the correct codec(s) installed. Presumably the file plays ok in windows media player or whatever??

Try [URL=***********.headbands.com/gspot/]GSpot it will tell you what codecs an AVI file uses.

Also AVI's use two different codec/filter interfaces. DirectShow and VFW. Directshow is generally used for playback, whilst VFW is used for encoding, converting, etc. So just because you can play a file does not mean you can always convert it.

If it is a valid AVI then it can be converted... What do you mean gspot was no help?? I fail to see how it could have been no help.

The best AVI player (according to me) is media player classic. However all directshow players use the same codecs, so in theory on the same system they are all capable of playing the same files. It isn't up to the player what AVI's it can play, it depends on what codecs/filters it has access to.
