Try searching on Kazaa for the ultimate XPdivx codec. It solved my problem.
The avi. file wouldnt play or convert for me and gspot said it was mpeg4. Installed the ultimate then the codec from there and voila.

In this case GSpot says it ain't a valid AVI though.

Ultimate XP DivX is I believe just an older version of the Nimo codec pack.

SOME OF THE FILES DOWNLOADED OF KAZAA need to be converted with vdub and tempeg.
1st you rip the sound file off as a wav file.
then you use tempeg to join the wav file with the video.
then you burn it with nero.
takes about 5-10 mins to rip the sound with vdub and another 5-10 hours to join them back together with tempeg.
but it works......

Yes, that's if you want to convert it. You do NOT have to convert it, if you do not want to play it. If it is not a valid AVI then VirtualDub won't open it either. If it were just incomplete, then it would, however GSpot reports if a file is incomplete.
