I did n't cut the track on the bottom of the m2 board...this did n't cause any problems for the first couple of days before i attempted the colour fix. could this be the problem? what does not cutting the track do?

ok...the ps2 has now worked a couple of times...but it is intermittent...ie sometimes it plays the game or film..but other times the disc does n't spin and I get no data message.

try checking you cd\dvd controller points over no sound at all could indicate that the cd\dvd controllor might be dead or check your fuses also
they will have the code ps11, ps15, ps7 next to the fuse

look at the messiah2.com pages for a color fix where you just bridge 2 separate components that a far apart not too hard to do check out hte new install diagrams

You'll also want to cut the tack for the M2 fix. The symptoms are games that "sometimes" boot, which it sounds like is happening to you.
