Cable Select..... or better yet, read the instructions that came with the computer, they inform you how to do it.

However, without knowing what kind of Dell the person has, one can't really suggest too much.

I just put a A05 into my Dell recently. Easier for me as was straight swap for CDRW.

From left : forget audio cable unless other Reader doesn't have it. Next along is jumper, take the little bridge out (with fingernails) and set to Slave (or Master if other reader is slave-assuming both on same IDE). Next along make sure IDE cable is secure and lastly ensure power socket is right way round and secure.

If not detected after reboot, go to hardware - Device Manager and uninstall the IDE channel it is on and reboot.

Might not be the best way but I have always done it with no probs, used to on my DVD ROM when the ripping speed was too low also.
