Default "compress old files" under disk cleanup, what are these?

sponsored links

I was wondering what the "compress old files" under disk cleanup were. I was cleaning up my hard drive and noticed that there was almost 1 gig of stuff there. Before I delete it, I wanted to make sure it wasn't something I needed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
