Feurio is the best aduio CD writing program available. It doesn't write data, just Audio. It's offered as the flagship product from the same people who makes Nero. It is what I use for all my audio burning except for the few time I would take advantage of Nero's Crossfading options. Generally, if you remove the drive and reboot Windows XP will reinstall the driver. The same goes for the IDE Controller which you might want to reinstall also.
But, before you do these, try different media. Try reducing the writing speed, personally, I never write audio above 4X. Also make sure DMA is enabled on the burner and see if there is a firmware upgrade available for your burner.

I'm afraid you got me there. The only firmware I can come up with for the PhilipsCRW1610/CCD4911 is the vP1.4

It appears to be the same file. CDR-Info lists a vP1.4 for PhilipsCRW1610/CCD4911 link which yeilds a FlashTool-v3.2.zip download.

[EDIT]
The Firmware Page not only also lists the P1.4 but a P1.5 as well. This installs FlashTool 3.4.
[/EDIT]
