yes the mics output is very low just tried the mic with the maxim screensaver on. I have to really crank up the tv output to get any output from the mic. The mic seems to work but the output is so low that you can't hear it when playing a song a at reasonable sound level..

any recommendations for a good mic???

what type of mics do other maxim users use?

Microphones are available in different impedences (Measured in Ohms), there are low impedence Mics (Usually 200 - 600 ohms) and High Impedence Mics (around 50k ohms) the Low impedence Mics are the most popular so I'm guessing that is possibly the one you are using

Most pro products are designed for Both types of Microphone however some domestic products will only use one or the other!. Certainly the problem that you describe sounds like Impedence mis-match!.

Check the impedence of your Mic (usually marked around the bottom of the windshield or on the box it came in). If it is 600 ohms then you need to consider buying a 50k impedence mic, if it is already a 50k mic, then replace it with a 600 ohm version!. Impedence convertors are available but they usually cost more than a new mic!.

I'm expecting some new 600 ohm Mics in later today at 9.50 plus postage. I can also supply a dual impedence (switchable low / high impedence) for 19 if required.

As I said in my emails to you, I tried 5 different Microphones in my Maxim, including a Shure, a Sennheiser, and my BeyerDynamic Radio Mic, and all worked perfectly, with the Maxim connected to the TV using the RCA 3 pin connection cable.
It is definetly your Microphone sockets that are dodgy mate.
