I don't know if it can play backup without modifying the Saturn.

That game called Steam Hearts. Sega censor the Saturn version and cut out a few extreme sex screens. The PC Engine version is the uncensor one. I have both version.

The modchip a very simple 4 wire install. The soldering points are huge and it's pretty much impossible to mess up if you follow the instructions. If you're still not confident then maybe you get a professional chipper to install it for you.

I think it is very hard to find a mod chip for Saturn now.

Installing the Saturn is easy to install. At most there are only 1 or 2 wires to solder (depending on model). Some models don't even require any soldering and you just need to plug them in.

These places still carries Saturn Mod boards...

If you want to play backups without a MOD chip you can use the swap trick. Read the FAQ ***********.litespeedcomputers.com/sx/misc/
I highly suggest you get a MOD board if you treasure your Saturn so much since the swap trick will eventually cause damage to the CD drive spindle.

Dreamcast games didn't come with any kind of real protection. Sega released DC games on a special GD-ROM format which are uncopyable but obvious the groups out there managed to rip the game out and burn them to normal CDR's. After the launch of the utopia boot disk, self booting titles was the natural progression.
