No, it currently doesn't play DVD retails, CD retails, DVD backups or CD backups. Doesn't even play DVD movies or audio CDs. I've been told that this is an indication that either the laser is completely dead or the mod chip burned out.

before replacing the laser, try removing the power wire to
the modchip and see if the ps2 will boot again.

Update; I got a drive from a friends dead console. I first tried replacing the laser, with no improvement. I then tried swapping out the drive assemblies. Still no joy. I'm about to give up. Any futher suggestions?

Oh, I also have removed the magic chip with no change as well.

Final update: Its fixed!! Checked the mobo fuses with a multi and found ps13 (tiny little bugger) was blown. Removed it then put a bead of solder there and the console was able to spin and read discs again. Now I just need to find a replacement fuse. Anybody know a retail source for them?
