andyr, Open your registry and press Ctrl + F. Enter "ComDlg32" as a search string, of course without quotes. It should show you one Key Value to the left window pane which holds lots of info regarding your Open & Save files. Plus, registry is such a nasty thing which can reveal so many things about you and your behavior with the machine; at no extra cost for the equipment but using a single 124 KB RegEdit.EXE

But hey, I liked your idea of using RAM Drive for temp files.

Thanks guys. I had forgotten about Window Washer. I think that will do the trick for me.
The Tweak UI version for XP is different from the 98 one, and I don't see the same "paranoia" settings in it.

I might play with the ramdisk thingie. Sounds interesting
