The Playstation 2 linux kit allows you to turn your playstation into a Linux box WITH network connectivity.

Comes with 40G hard drive
Sony PS2 USB keyboard
Sony PS2 Mouse
PS2 Ethernet adapter (takes a regular network cable)
PS2 VGA adapter so you can connect the Linux box to a computer monitor
PS2 Linux CD/DVD (this is the operating system disk)

This is for serious computer geeks. One advantage of running Linux on the PS2 is that it allows you to develop apps and use the graphics hardware of the PS2.

I thought I was going to do this, but don't really have the time.

This is hardly used. I just connected everything together and installed Linux onto the hard drive that comes with the kit.
One thing you need to buy in addition to the kit is a Memory Card. This acts as the linux kernel that gets booted.

True, but take a look at what our XBOX counterparts are doing with thier systems. Running Linux, DIVX, MP3, APPS, EMULATORS, ECT. It's one of those "Let's just see if we can do it" sort of deals. I am also curious if anyone knows what kind of options hooking up an external HD via, USB or Firewire port on the PS2 will allow me to do? Anyone?

thats been out for a while, but its much different from X-boxes version.

The PS2 version is certified by Sony, and X-boxes version is just homebrewed.
