Unhappy Major malfunction

OK here is the dilly, I got my ps2, version 1, almost as soon as they came to america, and i put the very nice magic 3.1 in it, and it works just fine for cd-r games, now my question is, WHY CAN'T I PLAY DVD-R's????? The dude i sent my ps2 off to that put in my mod chip said it worked just fine, the laser was just fine and it had direct boot on the dvd-r's, i have downloaded nero, recordnow max, alcohol 120% and reigstered with nero and alcohol, and i got 2 useless sony disks, i am using a Toshiba sd-r5002 and i upgrade the firm ware, and looked over the net for guides and a little bit of help and can't find it, ephemeral fantasia is what i tried to back up both times

Does it still play original DVD games?

Only ask because your PS2 is getting on a bit now to be honest and the early lasers weren't particulary good at reading CD-r/DVD-r e.t.c.

well, i burn at 1x for dvd-rs and 4x for cd-rs, and my originals boot up just fine no probs at all, all of my cd-r games, (70+) work just fine, and i regularlly clean the system to avoid dust build up adn stuff that might hurt the laser. But waht about brands of dvd-rs work best? and does color on the bottom of the disc mean anything?
