Just tried IC 8 and i had a similar experience as Uranus- file size was about 4.18gb as well.

I'm now ripping the same dvd with dvd shrink 3 beta 5(catch me if you can r2-movie alone with just dolby soundtrack-no subtitles is 5.5gb) wasn't too impressed with ic 8- ripping took over 2hrs on my athlon xp 2.2ghz, and wasn't noticeably better than dvd's i've ripped previously using dvd shrink or dvd xcopy express.

Can someone point me to a decent step by step tutorial on using CCE to rip a dvd-

I've been trying to to use tmpgenc to convert the vobs into mpeg2 files (is this even the right way of doing it) which is taking a ridculously long time in the first place and have been trying repeatedly to use it and keep hitting brick walls!

tmpgenc is slower than hell at encoding. when i tried it before, a 1 pass took 3x longer than using cce.

This is the guide i first used for cce + avisynth. it looks daunting at first but after you've done a couple you wont even look at the guide anymore.

CCE to rip ??

Surely you mean DVD Decrypter? CCE should be used for encoding the film if you plan on going that route. There are also a couple of tools that make using CCE easy and you can read a lot more about them also at the Doom 9 forums.

Sweet jesus, they still haven't fixed the sizing problem? :O It wouldn't be so bad if the size at least was off the same amount each time ... then at least you could eventually figure it out. Having it come out a different size each time just sucks though. Still, I can't knock the quality once it finally rips to an acceptable size (usually takes me about 3 tries to get it to 4.30GB+)

Yeah the limit is set at default as being 4.31- which yielded 4.18 actually- but the hidden settings editor doesn't work for ic8 so we can't mess around with the file size settings.

for a movie of around 5.5 gb would the improvement in quality between CCe and IC/DVDshrink/dvdxcopyexpress be noticeable or is it only for very high end compression (~50-60% compression)
