Default Question about burning at 4x with Sony DRU-500A

sponsored links

Just for the record, I have a Sony DRU-500A burner and I have firmware 2.0f. Here are the results:

Burns 1x ritek dvd-r at 2x
Burns 4x memorex dvd+r at 4x
Burns 4x princo/ritek/dupe-ez/optodisc dvd-r at 2x

Is there anything I can do to get these princo's to burn at 4x? I have tried dupe-ez, optodisc and ritek 4x dvd-r and they all burn at 2x using the 2.0f firmware. I dont understand why my burner will burn 4x compatible dvd+r at 4x but will not burn any 4x compatible dvd-r at 4x?

Apparently you aren't the only one with this problem. They have allot on this at doom9 first someone said [URL=********forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=62250&highlight=DRU500A]"These Dupez discs sure do suck. 4 coasters out of 4."
Second [URL=********sony.storagesupport.com/cgi-bin/sonysupport.cgi/5Q3qEl6QUyS3HoBEjBYkqP5IfLIfGtSM/faq/view/672]this is how sony said to fix it.
Third someone said stick with + and you wouldn't have a problem.
Also you didn't say what software you use, and someone said to use RecordNow Max for 4x -R. Hope that helps other than that I don't have the drive but you might to do some reading at doom9.

I don't think you're supposed to put Princos in that 500a. meritline.com has a list of what media you can use.

WOW. I've never seen new name brand DVD-R media sold as is , unless they discontinued it.

[URL=********forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=53828&highlight=Princos]"One of our wholesalers offered us Princo 4x DVD-R media. But they had the caluse "sold as is, no returns accepted". And to think I was scared enough of the princo 4x media even before they had that disclaimer.

However they did say the last batch they went throguh was of good quality and I believe my wholesaler, I just don't trust princo's quality control."

That would make me think twice!!!!

2.0f really seems to be giving people grief. I've seen more complaints about this firmware than any other that has been released for the Sony. Is there anyway to downgrade the firmware?
