Default avi files to dvdr - what kind of q1uality is expected?

I see lots of avi files around the 700mb size. As i understand it these have far better compression than dvd and the quality is quite close. I know these can be converted as i have read the posts on thne forum but what kind of results are typical - i.e. how close are they to dvd quality or how much better are they to vcd quality - be interested in comments as i am thinking of buying a dvdr burner or setting up a pc to a tv

Well AVI's are generally 640x?? max and are 1:1 not 4:3 or 16:9 so I wouldn't say that the quality was close to DVD. Also 700MB ones will generally only have 2channel sound.

You should be able to achieve something that looks and sounds pretty much the same with a DVD transfer. If you are worried, then just get a DivX/XviD enabled player and play them as is.
