Default How big hdd can i use for PIII 550 pls???

Thinking of buying a BIG harddrive for my pc, but not sure if my motherboard can support it?? Currently i have a PIII 550mhz, and i am thinking of getting a harddrive of upto 300gb. So couldsome1 pls tell me if the pc is capable of handling upto that size?? THX alot in adv...

For drives that are larger than 137GB, not only your mobo BIOS but also the OS must support them.

HD manufacturers have the tools to help your system handle the big drives. For example, Maxtor has a bootable CD ISO of the MaxBlast utilities that help you install and break the 137GB capacity barrier. However, you need to run WinXP SP1 for the system to recognize the full drive capacity.

Some big drives come with PCI cards to help your system deal with the capacity.

I don't think your mobo by itself would recognize the whole capacity of a 300GB HD.

XP Pro should be able to handle it.

HD's larger than 137GB require 48-bit LBA supports. Windows XP does not provide native supports for such HD's but the XP SP1 adds 48-bit LBA supports for these HD's. So as I said above, you need Windows XP SP1 or Windows 2000 SP3 or you must use a 3rd party software.
