Default Losing Network Connection randomly

sponsored links

Hi guys, I have a strange problem with my laptop (running xp pro).

Basically i'm at uni and use VNC quite alot to carry out simulations etc on my home computer which is otherwise idle.

With vnc and with bit-torrent which i've started using now, I tend to find that sometimes my the netwrok connection on my laptop will eventually lock up, as if the the network cable has become unplugged (although that warning message does not come up)

when this happens i cannot use the internet, email, or any of my internet specific programs along with not being able to connect to anything on the LAN either

I had a problem before with being unable to share my shared folders on a network which I found to be something relating Norton AV but i tried that and that hasn't fixed the problem.

I used to use kazaa from college and that never caused a problem, but VNC and several bit torrent clients that i'v used have caused problems

I then thought it may be a collge related problem but the same problems occur when i'm at home (behind a smc barricade router).

However on my desktop which runs xp home but in evry other way has near identical software installed never has this problem

not sure if this may be a possible problem but the version of xp pro i have on my laptop has the m$ virtual engine installed while my desktop didn't and so i've been running Sun's java console instead

any help would be very much appreciated.

p.s. In the event of a "network lock up" reatrting the computer sorts out the problem until it locks up again

p.p.s. For both machines the tcp/ip settings are to obtain the ip and dns values automatically
