Yep there are a number of utils for this, my favorite is DVD Identifier which is a FREE d/l here:- ********dvdplusid.cdfreaks.com/

Moving this to the new media forum for you.....

What we would like for members to do in the future in fact is to scan their DVDR's with software such as this and simply copy & paste the details into their post. This way we will all know exactly what disc/dye type it is as there are so many dif brands around but really only a handfull of DVDR manu's such as Ritek, Princo, Prodisc, TDK, etc, etc.

We will post a sticky on this in time providing d/l links and more info on this.

can you tell me if these programs tell you what speed the disk is as well

If you use Nero to burn, the tools with it has a utility "CD Speed".
Select your burner and pop in a blank or already burnt disk and check in using the Diskinfo drop down in the extras toolbar.
