kind of a dumb question i guess but what does partitioning and formatting mean anyway? Whats going on when i do that?

Partition means, dividing the disk up, If you have a 80gig hd, you take whatever amount out of it and seperate it. I want 25 gigs from it, so now I have 2 drives a 25 gig and 55 gig drive.

Formatting is basically erasing a disk or making it writable

Here's an ****ogy for you.
Partitioning may be likened to a farmer dividing his fields into plots and Formatting would be digging new furrows prior to sowing each plot.

ok well i wonder why that would make the difference of windows working or not (the partion part)

I guess defragging is thinning and weeding and formatting is harvesting.

Topple69, going by the problem you are having "partmgr.sys", then the problem lays in the partition you do or don't have.

Have at look at [url=***********.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm][b]HARRY O's SITE[/b] site and follow the instructions.

That should sort you out, if not, or you require more gardening tips, post back.
