Unhappy Anyone else having problems with Magic V 50k?

sponsored links

This is basically a copy of the email I sent to the place I got the chips, wanted to see if anyone else is having problems or if I got a bad batch or something.

"I'm having some major problems with these chips.
These are the first of the batch that I tried installing or sold.

I went through 3 different ones in 2 brand new USA V9's.
24 awg solid wire for power, 30 awg kynar for everything else.
I'm using the diagrams right from china-magic.com...just used wire instead of soldering gnd directly to the mainboard. These are both V9's...no cd/dvd BGA on top.

The first one(PS2) I did using the regular mounting spot on the right side of the board.
Used the Messiah 2 power point...continuous with recommended point.
- Garbled logo once in a while.
- Original dvd, dvd-r....seem OK
- Original CD....Authenticate fine, few seconds of black screen then RSOD
- backup CD-r....boot but crash in game.
- PS1 cd-r...seem OK.

Searched the web a little...saw info for install at modchip.ca.
Removed chip, remounted where recommended, routed R along the outer ground plane.
- Same thing, but no garbled logo.

Swapped chip with a different one...same exact problems.

Second one(PS2)...used another new chip, recommended spot.
Used double Kynar to recommended power point.
- original dvd...authenticates, black screen for a few seconds then browser screen with PS2 gold(dvd) disc.
- dvd-r...really long wait to authenticate then seems to crash(black screen)
- cd-r...boots fine and quick, then crashes in-game.
- Original CD....Authenticate fine, few seconds of black screen then RSOD
- PS1 -- didn't try.

Re-did this one with the RST point shown at chipzone.com...almost the same thing...dvd-r's now boot but seem to take longer than expected.

All the connections are clean, checked all with a DMM for continuity, checked for bridges to other nearby points, etc. Checked the traces by the via's with a Radio Shack pocket microscope.

Test discs I'm using:
Original DVD - Demo disc w/ Final Fantasy movie trailer
DVD-r - Shinobi
Original CD - Unreal Tournament & Dave Mirra 2(brand new)
CD-r - Dave Mirra 2
PS1 cd-r - Legend of Legaia

Wanted to note, the PS2's both work fine with the chip disabled. No crashing with Mirra.
I also tested them before I removed the warranty sticker in the first place."

Anyone?

Sounds like bad chips, I heard the first magic 50ks had a buggy code...

barracuda, you might have gotten some clones unless you do get them from a known source that sells originals.

I've had the garbled logo on Magic 50k (definitely non-clone chips). Every now and then it comes up garbled, but the games still boot fine. Never had any of the other problems you encountered. I also used the Messiah 2 moutning location, I don't like putting chips where they recommend in the Magic install pic, I think it increases possible heat problems.

Yeah I don't like jamming the chip somewhere where it doesn't lay flat.
These are real, got them from foundmy.

He got back to me on the email and said that some people have reported that another point needs to be grounded...the second bare card-edge type connector from the left. Gonna try that now.
