how are you going to be able to put .mp3's on it if the drive does not read cdr/dvdr and lacks a directory browser for the drive itself ? surely they wouldnt be letting you download off the net being how strick Sony is right now on P2P.

i think your confusing the HDD for ps2 for the capabilities of PSX, even then though, i dont see how you would get .mp3's on that either.

the Japenese PS2 has the ability to access the hdd via the browser menu, you can create folders for saved game data to it.

Browse the internet (but you can do that without the hdd on any ps2) & many extra features

gohan5052, easier said than done.

You can't play nor have the HDD copy over files without the use of certain commands, you can't play any audio files without an application (the x-box hdd has software on it) the PS2 hdd will never be quite as user-friendly as the x-box one, as the x-box system shares many factors of common ground compared to a computer

Code:
"just like you do on the xbox it will let you rip from audio cds"
... not to be mean but you dont know what your talking about.

gohan you REALLY need to read up on ps2linux and what it can do, it also will explain many of the differences you do not know about the ps2 hardware.

i *could* see a homebrew application that would access ext2 partition on the hdd, but that is a really big COULD.

did you know you cant even play music cd's when your running ps2linux? all the discs must be Sony ps2 discs. However, you can get around that by adding another drive to the cable and supporting the kernel for it.

if you ran ps2linux, the ps2 would be the most user friendly system out there right now. no you cant play games from the hdd like all the younger people want, but you can do ALOT with ps2linux.

it comes down to can you code? are you willing to code? there is not as many people porting aplications to the ps2 like people are porting code to the xbox. obviously the reason xbox has so much stuff is because porting to it is not as difficult if you already have working source and the CPU's are EXTREMELY similar. ps2 on the other hand, well ps2linux atleast is another story. not to many people that are willing to port to it, actually have a hdd in their ps2. xbox comes with a hdd, so that is convient and hassle free. ps2 you need to buy your own hdd and also a network adapter.

bottom line to me is that ps2linux is far, far, faaaar better than anything xbox can give you, but if you dont know much about how the general computer works (you know what i mean by that), then it could be intimidating to use.

if you just want to come home and relax after work and get the most out of your system hassle free, xbox is the way to go. if your willing to come home, put in a hdd and network adapter into a console, ps2linux is the way to go. zhit its a full blown linux OS, what's better than that to someone who wants to hack around?
