NEC ND1300a, huge buffer fluctuations

i just got some nice ritek g04 dvd-r's for my new nec nd1300a burner, but when i went and burned for the first time at 4x using Nero 6 the buffer indicator was going crazy, it would bounce from 90% down to 14% then back up to 90% and down to 10% for the entire burn, nero said it completed successfully but is there anyway i can stop the buffer from doing this.. anyone else have this problem?

Do you have alot of stuff running? alot of stuff in the sys tray?
How much ram do you have? what speed is it? Do you have DMA enabled?

not too much running at all in the background, Instant messanger and Norton AV, ive got 768 megs of ddr, amd 2000xp processor and dma should be enabled but ill double check right now.. actually im not sure how to tell, ive got the dvd burner attached to a promise pci ATA100 controller.
