firmware update required for pioneer dvdr drives to burn 4x media? if so, when was this? If i buy this drive today, would the firmware version be up-to-date? What version is that? I always hate updating firmware...

Not if you are buying one of the new Pioneer 106/A06 drives. It will burn at 4x to just about any 4x media with the stock firmware (unless it's really crappy media).
