Default s3 savage4 driver update?

my computer came with the s3 savage4 16mb videocard w/driver version (4.11.01.8007-8.10.10). i want to update it so i could update the latest direct3d version, i now have the version(4.07.00.0700). i've purchased a videogame for my son but can't get it to work, it requires the following version(directx 8.1). my question is how do i go about updating my videocard? do i remove the old version and install the new version without loosing my computer functions? i've downloaded the videocard driver version 8.2! will it work for my card? i also have the latest version of directx(9 or 10 something). can someone show me step by step on how to approach this, i cannot afford to crash the computer for any period of time otherwise the spouse will chew me!!

If you're running Win2K/XP, it's strongly recommended that you use the [url=http://ranger.s3graphics.com/swlib/395drv/84002w2ks3agplogo.zip]Driver v8.40 instead.

In Device Manager, right click on Display Adapters then select Update Driver and point to the folder that you have the driver for update.

Edit: As a note from what you said you'd the latest DirextX, please be sure it's DX9.0b and that it's not DX9.0a. To check the DX version, type dxdiag in the Run box.

Sorry for reviving the topic... but I really need help. I can't update, it's not working. I extracted the files to a folder called S3. It doesn't work.
