What's the make/model of the 40GB HDD? Also those of the 160GB if you plan to use it on this K6-2 as well.

FYI, I also have a 500MHz K6-2 with 256MB RAM and 8MB ATI video. WinXP runs fine on this baby but a bit sluggish. However, a 16MB or more video memory will definitely help. Surprisingly, Windows Server 2003 would run much faster even with all multimedia stuff enabled. You may find Win2K with SP4 to be the best for this system.

the 40gb is a Maxtor 7200rpm and the 160gb is a western digital 7200 special edition caviar

As for the OS suggestions - thank you. I considered going back to WinMe but never thought of Win2000. I dont have Windows Server so I think I might go with Win2000 if i dont figure this mess out. Will it be easy to network to my WinXP PC and also how is the compatibility with WINMX and other DL apps (and Norton Systemworks 2004/Norton Internet Security 2004_- those are pretty much the only programs that will be installed

If you do not already have the bootable MaxBlast 3 CD, you can download its bootable ISO image [url=***********.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/maxblast_3_cd_iso.htm]HERE. For the WD drive, download Data Lifeguard Tools [url=********support.wdc.com/download/index.asp]HERE. Both MaxBlast 3 (for Maxtor drives) and Data Lifeguard Tools (for WDC drives) will help you break the size limitation that your mobo's BIOS can't overcome. However, to use drives that are larger than 137GB, you must run WinXP SP1 or Win2K SP3/SP4.

I did not recommend you run Win Server 2K3 on this machine. Just mentioned it to let you know this OS would run faster than WinXP on slower systems. If you run Win2K with SP3 or SP4, I do not think you'll have problems with the mentioned apps. You'll need to update DirectX to v9.0b and WMP to v.9.x for better multimedia supports. However, I believe WinXP will run fine on your K6 with 384MB RAM.

Edit: Backup your data 1st!!!
