Default Modchip comparison ... again (v9-v10)

sponsored links

OK, I know this topic has gone on many, many times but it seems the playing field is always changing ... and to be honest, I'm lost as hell. :P Previous posts I've seen on this always put the DMS3 on top, with Messiah 2 in a very close second. No mention of how the MXL-2 chip fits into the picture. Also, a lot of the previous topics (nearly all) are on previous PS2 versions and I'm only concerned about the v9-v10 consoles as that's what I will be working with.

The latest Matrix MXL-2 chip doesn't seem to have any shortcomings from what they say. Claims it plays everything, even PAL games ... but I don't know if they are simply referring to installations on PAL consoles. The note is on the page for the US chip though.

DMS3 v9 seems to do just about everything and has the nice feature of being flashable. The makers themselves however say that not all games will work, particularly those with anti-mod detection. They also say their chip won't play PAL games on NTSC consoles.

And then of course there's the Messiah 2 chip whose homepage I couldn't find but I have heard general statements that the M2 plays everything as well.

Is any one chip better than the other atm? I know the DM3 is upgradeable via flash but I would imagine with major changes, you could someday need a new chip.

Honestly, IMO The DMS3 chip's stock bios is probably the best. The upgrade offers some cool features but removes several essential ones (ie Macrovision protection). So it depends. The V9 could come with the upgraded Bios and not the older version (which could be the problem). I have the V2.0 chip with the stock Bios and it has worked with the latest games (ie FFX-2, NFSU, Manhunt).

The MATRIX MXL 2 is rock solid with exellent backup from the MATRIX team, imho it is the best chip going for all versions of PS2.

After doing some further reading on this over at the DMS3 forums, it seems there are an a**load of problems with the DMS3 on v9/v10 consoles. 2 months running and still no v1.9 firmware to fix all the boot problems. Have a feeling that if I get the DMS3 now, trying to play a PS2 game will be reminiscent of playing Contra on the NES (button-mash and hope for the best). Seems Messiah 2 Pro v1.33 is the best bet for those who can't or aren't willing to wait for the DMS3 v1.9 firmware.

The DMS AND MESSIAH 2 have been known to kill the version 9/10 machines.
The MATRIX MXL2 has not.
At the moment believe it or not the best solution to playing
backups on the version 9/10 machines is the SLIDE CARD and SWAP MAGIC DISCS.
You dont void your machine and it doesent kill the machine either.
