ok phil.... tried the bios and all devices are set to udma .....downloaded and installed the update....still will not stay ticked in dma .......have also changed to this.....

It could be that something is corrupted somewhere in W98se

Cant think of anything else to suggest m8, other than a reinstall of Windows.

Have you tried setting devices to LBA in the bios rather than UDMA?

only got these options in bios........

pio mode-0
pio mode-4
enhanced dma
ultra ata (udma)
