right. make sure file and print services are installed on the laptop. create a share on the other one and you will have something to see other than printers and shared docs.

First How do I make sure files and print services are installed?

Second I do have my c: drive shared on both computers.

What I don't understand is why, on my laptop, does it have a gui for my desktop c: drive, but when I click on it it brings up my laptop c: drive?

sorry i didnt understand the 2nd question, but to install file and print services just right click the network neighborhood icon and choose properties. you will see other services in there like tcp/ip click add for new service and choose it in there.

File and print sharing is activated. now when I type \\desktop I get an icon that says shortcut to hp pavillion c:. That is my desktop c: drive. The problem is when I click on it I get my laptop c: drive.

My question is why when I click on the icon for my desktop c: drive do I get my laptop c: drive.

first why dont you try sharing a folder besides C one both to test it and see if you can view it. Sharing the C can sometimes give you problems due to the administrative share and permissions. create a folder in the root of c called test and share it.
