Gee you can post cr@p sometimes Handydude.

Where I am, Plextors and Pioneer DVD burners cost over twice as much. And they don't do DVD RAM, either of them.

As far as speed, big deal. Firmware upgrades usually take care of that. Even if they don't, so what. Speed isn't everything.

If you can get Plexy's and Pioneers for less than $75 retail, as you proclaim, then share it with me. If they are the same price, or cheaper, then yes, they would be a good option.

The LG won best DVD burner in two leading magazines for the last couple of months, with a score of 9.5 out of 10.

Sorry, but I would take the word of magazine experts over you any day. It's nothing personal.

It's all well and good stating brands, but what model would you suggest, and how much are they, and where from?

Pioneer launches its new multiple format DVD writer. The DVR-108 is the industry's first DVD writer to support 16x write speeds on both DVD-R/+R* along with the option to write at 4x speed on Double Layer media** . This extends Pioneer's track record of establishing key performance benchmarks when introducing new DVD writers.
With the facility to write 4.7GB of data to write-once media in approx. seven minutes, or store up to 8.5GB on Double Layer media, the DVR-108 enhances a wide range of DVD applications including the authoring, editing and storing of video files, developing digital music catalogues, building image libraries and backing up data.

* Until such time as 16x media is available (expected October 2004) 16x write speeds can be achieved on selected 8x speed DVD-R/+R media types.
** 4x Double Layer media is not expected to be available until January 2005. Until then 4x write speeds can be achieved on selected +R 2.4x Double Layer media.
"Writing at 16x on 8x media is only possible with firmware supported verified 8x media""

I bought the LG (GSA4120B) that Insomniac mentionned and I'm very pleased with it. It does a great job and it's one of the cheapest burners I've seen...as a matter of fact, the price has dropped even lower on this model since I bought it a few weeks ago. Do a search for it to get the specs. The only problem that I can see for you is that I don't think it comes in black. Other than that, I highly recommend this burner. Good luck!

JTA, I have no idea what you are on about, and neither do you it seems. Is the price you quoted retail? No.

I quoted the maximum retail price for the LG, US$145. The retail of the Pioneer DVR-A08XLA for example, is US$242!

The selling price as opposed to retail is far less. If you are going to compare prices on two different units, at the very least compare either retail, or selling price for both! Not to mention shipping or postal charges.

The same site you used quotes AUS$137.50 for the LG.

The LG is a great burner. I don't have one, but for it to get a score of 9.5/10 in two leading magazines, beat both Pioneer, Plextor, and LiteOn speaks volumes.

It also supports DVD-RAM, which the others don't.

The Pioneer is faster at dual-layer, but to me that doesn't justify the extra expense. Anyway, in real use, as opposed to just numbers, the difference is much less!

Shadowfax, I'm not familiar with the ASUS, so I can't really comment. Also, check the LG site to see if it comes in black. I'm not sure, but I don't think so.
