I've never had that much problem with AMR modems...especially with XP. I've also never needed any extra software. As long as the motherboards had an AMR/CNR slot, the PCTel AMR modems always eventually installed fine. Maybe you got some bad modems, or as I've said before...bad drivers. Can you have anyone else test the modems/drivers for you?

Maddhatter62

P.S. What motherboard(s) are you using?

Chaintech 6AJA4 mobo and the other three are QDI Advance A10F mobo's.

When I used the Smartlink ones, I had no problems at all, didn't know these were PCTel until they arrived from Ebay.
Mental Note: 'check modem brand before purchase'!

I've tried 4 of these modems on four system now, all do the same?
Maybe drivers then, but there's a ton of drivers out there for the same modem and OS, I surpose it's a case of wading through them all on the web!

Thanks for your help guys!
If you have anyother ideas, please shout!

Happy.

I found something about "Modem Use IRQ" in the Chaintech 6AJA4 manual. Try and look that up.

I found this regarding the QDI Advance A10F :

This is from the QDI FAQ and supports the link above:

Q Can I use my AMR modem on A10F?
A Yes. As A10F has no on-board codec, your AMR modem must feature support for Primary operation mode.

I'm not sure whether this means the PCTel AMR v1.2 isn't compatible, but read the modem descriptions here:

***********.baber.com/baber/desktop_modem/amr.htm
(Notice it doesn't mention the "Primary/Secondary operation" function.)

Check this thread from: techimo.com:

Hi Maddhatter62

Firstly big thanks to you and everyone else that has helped with this.
We now have the answer -

Basically it seems that there are two settings for these AMR modems, Primary and Secondary. It seems some modems you can change and others you can't. Unfortunately my PCTel V1.2 ones are set as Secondary as Default and the jumpers pins have been removed.

From my understanding, if a mobo has onboard sound, then a secondary setting on an AMR may work, but if no onboard sound, then it has to be set to Primary.

As mine has no onboard sound and I can't change the setting on the AMR modem, then this may be why they won't work!

As I said this is my understanding from all that I have read and tried, but I could be way of base!

Many thanks again to everyone.

Happy. :-)
