Yes, You can install Xbox Media Center, I really like XBMC, you can even have it set to be your dashboard if you want. I use it as an app though. One of the best animated dashes around is UnleashX. It's default skin is more like the MS dashboard.

Search on xbox-scene forums for how to connect to xbins, they have a tutorial on how to connect and so forth.

What brand of memory stick did you use BTW?
