Default bluetooth compatibility

hey, not sure if this is the proper venue for this, but i have a question about bluetooth.

i have a non bluetooth phone and i want to get a wireless headpiece. i want the motorola HS850. i know they have the bluetooth adapters for the bottom of the specific phone that give non-bluetooth phones the ability to use bluetooth, but do i have to have a motorola phone (with motorola adapter for the bottom) with the motorola headpiece, or can i use my phone (an LG) with the LG adapter at the bottom and the motorola headpiece? in other words, do the phone (+ adapter) have to be the same company as the headpiece? thanks
